Andrea Mitchell

Andrea Mitchell, an American journalist and commentator, who works for NBC News in Washington D.C. and is a television anchor. She earned an undergraduate degree in English Literature from the University of Pennsylvania after growing as a child in New York City. Mitchell began her career as a journalist at KYW Radio and TV, Philadelphia in the year 1967. In 1976, she joined CBS-affiliated WDVM-TV in Washington DC (then WTOP). In Washington she was made general correspondent for NBC News a year later. She began to cover the White House in 1981 and was made chief of the congressional correspondent in 1988. Then she was named chief White House correspondent in 1992 and chief foreign affairs reporter in 1994 for NBC News in 1994. Mitchell played both host as well as a panelist on the TV news program Meet the Press. She also served as a panelist during the presidential debates in 1988 between George Bush and Michael Dukakis. Mitchell is married with Alan Greenspan, former Chairman of the Federal Reserve Board. In 2005 Mitchell received the prestigious Goldsmith Career Award for Excellence in Journalism from the John F. Kennedy School of Government and, in 2004, she was awarded the Radio-Television News Directors Association (RTNDA) honored Mitchell with the Leonard Zeidenberg Award for her work in the defense and protection of First Amendment Freedoms. Mitchell worked in the White House first for NBC News between 1981 and 1988, between the terms of Ronald Reagan's second term as president. Mitchell reported on many noteworthy stories that included arms control tax reforms to the budget and also the Iran Contra scandal. Mitchell also attended many summits with the help of President Reagan together with Mikhail Gorbachev.
